Our wonderful Senior Research Ecologist was in the paper today talking bat research!
Hannah Le Morvan, Senior Research Ecologist at Sangan Island Conservation and PhD researcher at the University of Exeter, has been awarded the Société Jersiaise’s Nigel Quérée Environment Award 2026 to analyse a 12-month acoustic dataset of Jersey’s bats.
Recorded continuously across sites including Jersey Dairy, Samares Manor, and coastal habitats, it’s the first dataset to capture a full year of bat activity, including winter, across a network of sites at once. Previous surveys have mostly covered a few summer nights per site, leaving big gaps in what’s known about the island’s bats.
The analysis will help identify which habitats matter most to different species and how activity shifts through the year, feeding directly into conservation planning for the island.
The project builds on existing support: PAM devices were funded by the States of Jersey Natural Environment Ecology Trust Fund, with analysis backed by BTO software and expertise, local knowledge from the Jersey Bat Group, and records access via the Société Jersiaise Zoology Section.
At Sangan Island Conservation we ensure all our staff have time they can dedicate to research to develop their own skills, but also so we can develop a better understanding of the ecology we work with on a day-to-day basis.
All this research feeds back into our island’s understanding which can help develop guidance and policies to help protect our natural ecosystems.
