Farm Advisory

Delivered by qualified Ecologists and Conservationists with extensive experience across the Channel Islands.

Sangan Island Conservation provides farm advisory and industry standard reports for farmers as part of their business auditing and development. Our assessments are based on clear, evidence-led fieldwork and a strong background in conservation science.

Farming and the Environment

Agriculture occupies more than 50% of the island’s land area, which means farming has a major influence on the island’s landscapes, wildlife, soil, and water resources. Farming has formed an intrinsic part of the island’s landscape for thousands of years and as such is intrinsically linked to our natural environment. There is no other industry or orgaisation of Jersey that can usually have the biggest positive impact on our natural environment but equally has the potential to cause the greatest harm. both local Government Departments and Charitable organisations. Our longest running project has been overseeing and implementing the management of Grouville Marsh SSI which we have been doing since 2012. Our work included winning the ‘Natural Jersey’ Mike Stentiford award in 2018.

We have been working with our island’s farming community since 2018 and help many of the farms to protect species and habitats that are vulnerable or declining with some of the farms holding significant proportions of our island’s populations for some species.

Agriculture business and consumers are more conscious than ever on how food is produced and the potential negative impacts agriculture can have. As such farming business need to be able to demonstrate that their operations are meeting high international standards and not just taking from the land but also giving back to the environment.

Sangan Island Conservation ltd works with agricultural business to create biodiversity audits and enhancement plans to help protect and grow the species and habitats present within the farm landscapes.

How Our Survey Process Works

Initial-Consultation

Initial Consultation

We review your site in the context of Jersey’s planning and biodiversity guidelines.

Desktop Study

We access ecological records (e.g. via local biodiversity databases) and identify potential protected species or habitats.

Field Survey

Our qualified ecologists assess the site, record habitats and check for protected-species features (roosts, ponds, hedgerows, etc.).

Reporting

We prepare a planning-ready ecological report (PEA / EcIA) or a species-specific survey report, aligned with local requirements.

Why Us?

Sangan Island Conservation combines the expertise of experienced Ecologists and Zoologists with a strong foundation in conservation science. Our assessments are evidence-led, practical and aligned with the expectations of Jersey’s planning authorities.
