Ecological Surveys for Planning

Delivered by qualified Ecologists and Conservationists with extensive experience across the Channel Islands.
Ecological Surveys for Planning

Sangan Island Conservation provides ecological surveys and industry standard reports for homeowners, landowners, property developers, charities and Government bodies. Our assessments are based on clear, evidence-led fieldwork and a strong background in conservation science.

Why Ecological Surveys Are Required

Planning authorities in Jersey may require ecological surveys where developments could affect wildlife, habitats or protected species. This helps ensure compliance with the Wildlife (Jersey) Law 2021 and the biodiversity obligations under the Island’s planning framework. Surveys are commonly requested where development involves:

If your planning officer or architect advises that an ecological survey may be needed, we can identify the correct type and deliver a report tailored to planning requirements.

Our Ecological Survey Services

All surveys are structured in line with professional ecological standards, and mindful of relevant Channel Island legal protections and planning-related biodiversity obligations.

Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA)

An initial assessment to identify habitats, potential ecological constraints, and whether further surveys are needed. Essential as the first step when preparing a planning application.

Habitat & Protected Species Surveys

Where there is habitat or species protected under Wildlife (Jersey) Law 2021 — for example, bats, amphibians, reptiles, protected plants or other wildlife.

Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA)

for proposals likely to have significant biodiversity impacts, or where mitigation / compensation measures may be needed.

EcIA is a process of identifying, quantifying and evaluating potential effects of development-related or other proposed actions on habitats, species and ecosystems. The findings of an assessment can help competent authorities understand ecological issues when determining applications for consent. EcIA can be used for the appraisal of projects of any scale including the ecological component of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)

How Our Survey Process Works

Initial Consultation

We review your site in the context of Jersey’s planning and biodiversity guidelines.

Desktop Study

We access ecological records (e.g. via local biodiversity databases) and identify potential protected species or habitats.

Field Survey

Our qualified ecologists assess the site, record habitats and check for protected-species features (roosts, ponds, hedgerows, etc.).

Reporting

We prepare a planning-ready ecological report (PEA / EcIA) or a species-specific survey report, aligned with local requirements.

Why Us?
