Jersey GLE Project – update

The research season is well underway and we are very excited about the data we are collecting this year.

Yesterday, we showed off some new kit from Titley Scientific as part of our acoustic work. This morning we went to sort out one of our detectors, and thanks to the long microphone cable, we are able to keep the microphone in the roost whilst keeping the detector outside to reduce disturbance to the roost.

Oftentimes, undertaking long-term acoustic monitoring does require access to roost space, and thereby disturbing the bats. But having the long extension cable completely minimises the disturbance risk and allows us to capture not only presence within the space, but all the fascinating behaviours that bats will exhibit inside.

While taking a visit inside the roost on this occasion, we took the opportunity to get some photos of the grey long-eared bats that were very interested in what we were doing (All photos and work taken under a licence).
