We’re pleased to share that Dr Amy Louise Hall, Chair of the Société Jersiaise Zoology Section and Director of Sangan Island Conservation, will be taking to the stage on 2 February to talk about a project close to our hearts: the ongoing study into bat activity on the Minquiers and Écréhous reefs.
The talk forms part of a free public event marking World Wetlands Day, held at the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel’s Rocco Suite from 17:30 to 21:00. Organised by Jersey Marine Conservation, the evening brings together more than 20 speakers and exhibitors from conservation charities, research institutions, and government bodies across Jersey, the wider Channel Islands, and the UK, alongside a marine exhibition showcasing their work.
Kevin McIlwee, chairman of Jersey Marine Conservation, has described the event as a chance to connect the public with leading marine conservationists and environmentalists, with the broader aim of building appreciation for Jersey’s coastal and marine ecosystems and encouraging steps toward their protection.
Amy’s talk, “Bats of the Écréhous and Minquiers,” will cover the joint project between the Société Jersiaise Zoology Section, the Jersey Bat Group, and Jersey Marine Conservation, with support from our own team here at Sangan Island Conservation. It’s the first systematic look at whether bats use these exposed offshore reefs, and the early results, including evidence of long-distance migrants like Nathusius’s pipistrelle alongside more resident species, have already turned up some genuine surprises.
Other talks on the evening include sessions on Jersey’s Ramsar wetlands, marine conservation highlights from 2024, seabird colonies, underwater photography, and the island’s aspirations toward geopark status, making for a packed programme for anyone with an interest in Jersey’s marine and coastal environment.
