PhD Project wins the Peter Warpole People’s Choice Award

We are absolutely thrilled to share that Sangan Island Conservation’s own Hannah Le Morvan has won the Peter Walpole People’s Choice Award at the Insurance Corporation Channel Islands Conservation Awards 2024 — chosen by public vote across the Channel Islands and beyond!

The Conservation Awards, established in honour of Insurance Corporation founder Peter Walpole, celebrate outstanding conservation work across the Channel Islands. Shortlisted projects are showcased through video entries, with islanders invited to cast their votes for their favourite through an online public poll. This year saw a record-breaking number of votes received, reflecting an incredible level of public engagement with conservation across both islands.

Hannah’s winning project — the Small Mammal Acoustics in the Channel Islands Project — is investigating the distribution, habitat associations, and climate change vulnerabilities of Channel Island shrews using innovative passive acoustic detection techniques. The project represents a significant step forward in understanding these often-overlooked but ecologically vital small mammals, and in developing the methodological toolkit available for their study.

“In a record-breaking year we were delighted by the particularly high number of votes received and interest from the public, and it was fantastic to see the support for Hannah’s project which supports the wildlife in our islands.”

Hannah said:

“I am so incredibly grateful for every single vote and for the warmth and support shown towards this project — it truly means the world. I was so moved to hear just how many people voted, not only for my project but for all of the incredible entries. It speaks volumes about how much people across the Channel Islands care about their natural environment. Every project shortlisted this year is doing meaningful, important work, and I hope this level of enthusiasm and engagement continues to grow. Conservation only succeeds when communities get behind it, and moments like this are a wonderful reminder of just how much that support matters.”

A huge thank you to Insurance Corporation for championing conservation work across the islands through this fantastic initiative, and to every single person who took the time to vote. We couldn’t be prouder! 🎉
