Welcoming Brooke De Gruchy to the Sangan Island Conservation Team

We are delighted to welcome Brooke De Gruchy to Sangan Island Conservation as Ecologist. πŸŽ‰

Brooke joins the team with a strong academic foundation in ecology and conservation, holding a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Ecology and Conservation and a Master of Science in Island Biodiversity and Conservation. She is a Qualifying Member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management, and holds memberships with the Royal Entomological Society, the British Ecological Society, the British Entomological and Natural History Society, and the Linnean Society. 🌿

Her research background is rooted in entomology, with a particular focus on pollinating insects and invertebrate ecology. πŸ¦‹ Her undergraduate dissertation examined the distribution of pollinator patches and their influence on pollinator diversity and abundance, while her Master’s project investigated butterfly population trends at Les Blanches Banques β€” a site of significant ecological importance for Jersey’s grassland invertebrates. This combination of field-based research and a genuine passion for local ecology makes Brooke a natural fit for the work we do here.

Brooke comes with practical experience in ecological consultancy, having worked locally in a development context prior to joining the team. She has undertaken professional development in invertebrate taxonomy, identification and conservation, including a course on Invertebrate Biodiversity and Monitoring Methods with the University of Oxford. πŸ”¬ Her survey skills extend across a broad range of taxa: she is trained in small mammal, amphibian and reptile surveys, and has achieved Technician level in acoustic bat analysis through BatAbility, alongside additional training in bat roost location and assessment in buildings and trees. πŸ¦‡

We are very much looking forward to the depth and detail that Brooke brings to the team, particularly her specialist knowledge of Jersey’s invertebrate communities. Welcome, Brooke! 🌱
